The Smith

A coworker and I decided to try The Smith for lunch the other day.  It’s a relatively new spot that opened in Penn Quarter this spring.  It’s actually part of a chain that is based in NYC.  I almost went to one of the NYC locations when I was there in March, but never had a chance.

When we walked in, it was fairly crowded, but then again, we were there during the lunch rush.  Since it was in Penn Quarter, I thought it might be full of tourists (I’m a local snob now), but they were small in number. We sat at a table for two which was less than arms length from the next table and it was so loud that I was afraid that I may not be able to hear my friend.  I realized that it was due to the space having an open floor plan and then guess that the enormous amount of tile had something to do with it as well.  Aside from all of this, I really like the décor.  I love subway tile and hope to have it in my kitchen someday.  The bar was massive that teemed with craft cocktail ideas and I already looked forward to going back for happy hour.

Finally, to the food!  We started off with the crab cake tots.  I loved everything about this name. They were small, wonderfully crunchy on the outside and delicious.  The crab was still very moist and flavorful.

We’re both die hard brussels sprouts fans, so when we eyed it on the menu, we instantly ordered it.  They were delicious!  I love roasted sprouts where they have a slight char and crispiness to them.  And these were seasoned simply with salt, pepper and lemon zest.  Oh that zest. Yum.

While my stomach ached for a burger, my mind said to be sensible and order a salad. A heavy dinner was coming later that evening.  I ordered the Mediterranean salad with romaine, cucumber, feta, red onion, chickpeas, tomatoes, olives, sweet peppers, and lemon dressing.  I added roasted chicken.

I have to say that I was a little disappointed with the salad.  It seemed like a slam dunk, but it was lack luster at best.  The chicken was well cooked, but lacked that punch of flavor.  Admittedly, this did dampen my enthusiasm a bit, but I will write that off to being cautious with my lunch choices.

I’m still definitely planning to go back, but I think I may try the brunch or maybe for lunch and try the burger.  Going back for happy hour is a given.
