Emmy Squared

Did you know there was such a thing as Detroit-style pizza? Nor did I, and I’m from Detroit. Apparently, the folks at Emmy Squared in Brooklyn knew because they have a spot that features this glorious pie not far from the Williamsburg Bridge. To me, this is a pizza like no other. It’s a rectangular pie that is more Sicilian in style, and baked in a rectangular pan that’s about an inch high. The toppings follow a somewhat different order: Cheese on the bottom, followed by pepperoni etc., then sauce that’s ladled in two bands on top. Do you know what the best part about this pizza is?  There’s no crust. The cheese gets baked all the way to the edge, so when the pie is presented at your table, everything is basically covered in cheese.  And the corner slice is like owning Boardwalk in Monopoly. It’s the most coveted slice. At least in my family.

Anyway, my friend and I made our way over to Williamsburg to see how Emmy Squared compared. In typical NYC fashion, the space was small, cozy, and crowded.  We were told that there would be over a 30-minute wait, but after only 10 minutes a huge party left, and we were seated quickly. Side note:  I think we were just lucky this way during our entire trip.

If you want a Coke, don’t bother. You’re in Brooklyn, so everything is going to be natural. We ordered cola that tasted more like sarsaparilla. It wasn’t Coke, but it was good.

Since we were still in our doughnut coma, we decided to order one pizza (it was small enough to be a hefty single portion), and split the toppings with sausage on one side and pepperoni on the other. There was an assumption that we would be sharing. I’ll get to that later.

The pizza arrived and it looked like a smaller version of my beloved Buddy’s. But was it going to taste any good? Yep! Obviously, it wasn’t going to taste the same, but it was very, very good right down to the slightly cheesy crunchy edge.

Are you ready for the funny part? While we waited for our pizza, I went on and on about the corner slice being the Boardwalk of the pizza. When I go to Buddy’s, we all order our own 4-square sized pizza so we get all corner pieces. Like I said before, we agreed to share the pizza. He ate both of his corner pieces, and then ate one of mine! I learned that day that I may be a little territorial about food. Or at least my favorite foods 🙂
