Alpha Pie House

A couple of weeks ago, on my way to a food truck, my friend and I spotted Alpha Pie House.  We thought it was a dessert/pie shop, but as we got a little closer we discovered it was really an authentic Greek pie shop.  I went in to grab a menu, but they didn’t have any, so I grabbed a little pamphlet and we made a note to go back and try this place.

We went yesterday.  I have to admit that the menu was little overwhelming.  There was so much to choose from!  And being from Detroit, I’ve eaten a lot of Greek food growing up, but it’s been a challenge finding places here.  I decided on the mini pie sampler.  For $8.95 I was given a selection of six sweet or savory pies.  I went with five savory and one sweet.

I was going to try to list and describe everything that I had but realized this would be impossible.  What I can say is that my assortment contained either feta, spinach and feta, yogurt, or olives and all were delicious.  The phylo was flaky and the olive oil fragrant.  The sweet pie was a spiral pie filled with vanilla custard and topped with powdered sugar.  I loved it.  I couldn’t believe that I didn’t get the baklava which is one of my favorites, but I’m so glad I went with the custard.  I’m typically not a custard dessert person, but this pastry changed my mind.

As I sat at the communal farm table, I couldn’t help but stare at the plate of a gentleman who was sitting next to me.  I finally had to ask him what he was eating because it looked so colorful and delicious.  He said it was the Mediterranean salad with grilled veggies, feta and grilled chicken.  Guess I’ll have to make another trip back for that.  And baklava.
