Brunch at The Diner in Adams Morgan

I’m sure I’ve mentioned this before, but I have a friend that I “brunch” with every couple of weeks.  And I’m using the term brunch lightly.  We usually start off with brunch, but then spend the rest of the day letting out taste buds guide us and end up eating all day.  My friend has the advantage, or should I say the motivation to work out twice a day.  I mostly keep up with my Fit Bit and try to take the stairs as much as possible.

We found ourselves hanging out in Adams Morgan.  Miles was attending a birthday party in the neighborhood and we had a few hours to kill.  I suggested The Diner since he’s never been.  I consider it to be my go to place for diners.  The food is always pretty solid.  I did warn him jokingly that when I go, I tend to only order side dishes.  I have no idea why.  I never want a full plate of anything, just little bites of everything.  Today was no exception.  As we gazed at the menu, we both immediately noticed the breakfast tots.  This concoction is a bowl with tater tots, topped with jalapeno peppers, onions, mushrooms, cheddar cheese, bacon and a scrambled egg.   We decided to order this meal item as an appetizer.  Since he’s a vegetarian, we asked for the bacon on the side and since I don’t like eggs, I just scooped out all of the goodness underneath and added the bacon later.

My eyes were drawn to the biscuits and gravy, but I also wanted grits with cheese.  What was a girl to do?  I ordered a side biscuit with a side of sausage gravy.  My friend ordered an omelet that came with a side of grits that he didn’t want, so I took those, but also asked for a side of cheese to add to my grits.  You should’ve seen this table.  It was an array of little plates and bowls everywhere.

I took the remains of the side of bacon and cheese and added it to my grits.  I don’t need to tell you how good grits are with bacon and cheese.  It’s the only way I can eat them. And The Diner makes their grits with milk which makes them extra yummy and creamy.

I have to say that the sausage gravy was a little thinner than I would like, but it was very, very good and the sausage tasted like the sage sausage I ate as a kid.  The biscuit was fluffy and really absorbed the gravy.  Surprisingly after eating all of this I wasn’t as stuffed as I anticipated.  Then again I didn’t finish the biscuit.  Well not right away.  Since there was a little room left in my tummy I decided to finish the biscuit.  By then I began to feel like Violet from Willy Wonka after she turned into a blueberry and felt like my friend needed to roll me out of the diner!  Totally.  Worth.  It.
