Peirce Mill in Rock Creek Park

My mom is in town this week to “babysit” while I work. My cousins got wind of this info and decided to come to town for a visit too. It’s a family affair! I was lucky enough to be able to take a little time off to spend with my family and play tourist.

Having my mom in town made me think of some of recipes I grew up with as a child. My mom is an excellent cook and baker and my dad likes to get in on the baking too sometimes. Here are a few recipes that I grew up with, watching, helping, or putting my own spin on, as I grew into my own. I hope you enjoy them 🙂

Pecan pie is my dad’s specialty.  I finally made my own for the first time a couple of years ago, and later tweaked it into a bourbon pecan pie.  Yum!

My mom’s pie classic is the double-crust apple pie.  I’ve never altered her recipe.  My only goal is to be able to make the crust as good as hers.  I’m getting there!

My mom’s other staple is homemade rolls.  They are the most delicious rolls I’ve ever eaten.  I’m still trying to match hers.

Last but not least are the chocolate chip cookies.  My dad and I would cream the butter and sugar by hand.  It was our way of spending more time together.
