I’m making hoe cakes this weekend and I’ve been having trouble finding an authentic recipe. Hoe cakes go by many names and depending on the region, different recipes. I was having this discussion with my 89 year old BFF coworker. She’s from Texas and has never heard of hoe cakes, johnny cakes, hot water cornbread or anything close, but she offered to bring in her Texas cookbook for me to thumb through.
This morning she brings in her Texas cookbook as promised and also her wonderfully worn, brown paged, scotched taped spine, 1964 10th edition of the Fannie Farmer cookbook. I was so excited! She wasn’t sure if I would find what I was looking for, but she’s allowed me to keep it over the weekend. Yay!!!
