My friend and I began our second day in NYC at The Doughnut Project in the West Village. My goal was to sample their breakout doughnut and then a plain glazed (I have a thing about trying the most basic item on the menu when it comes to doughnuts and cupcakes). It seems that The Doughnut Project had something else in store for us. When we got to the counter, I ordered the plain and the beet-ricotta, but that was followed by “oh that sounds good” or “let’s get that one too” or “bacon!” and a minute later I had six doughnuts that were so large they had to fit in two boxes. I’m not complaining. We gathered our boxes, coffee, and tea, and sat at a counter in front of the window.
Total side note: I never get tired of looking at New York City Streets. I love the history and the energy!
Back to more important matters like these doughnuts! Let’s start with the first box. Clockwise from the top left: plain glaze, bacon maple bar, those beetz are dope, and the Bronx. I grabbed a knife and starting cutting bite sized pieces. We started with the plain glaze. It was exactly what you would expect, plain glaze. The doughnut however, was very, very good. It was soft and fluffy and not too sweet. The maple bacon was pretty good too. The maple glaze was a little thick for me, but I think all was forgiven since there was bacon on top.
Just look at that bacon. I can still taste it. It comes from a market only blocks away from the shop.
Now for the star, those beetz are dope.
I will forgive the name because this doughnut is absolutely fabulous! The ricotta was sweet and reminiscent of cream cheese, but way better and the beet glaze had a savory/sweet quality. We wanted to finish that one right away, but still had three more doughnuts to try.
The Bronx is really a glazed doughnut with a touch of olive oil and black pepper. It was so good. You could just make out the olive oil, and there was a hint of black pepper. I would’ve liked just a tiny bit more, but I could still eat this one in two bites!
In our next box, we had the lemon love letter and blueberry and parsnip. My friend loved the lemon. I did too. It was so refreshing! I loved the sweet/tart quality and the lemon zest on top made it taste like the lemons were just plucked from the tree. Our final sample was the blueberry and parsnip. I couldn’t make out the parsnip, but the blueberry was superb. Again, it tasted very, very fresh and it wasn’t too sweet.
Since we finished our round, we went back for seconds of our favorites. At the same time, I was cursing myself for not wearing expandable pants. I was getting so full, but I couldn’t help it. My friend managed to finish the lemon, but I couldn’t eat another bite. Ok, so I did eat the bacon off the maple bar. I’m never going to turn my back on bacon. We reluctantly closed the boxes and went to the counter to ask if the server could toss them out. The server exclaims “you ate all of these doughnuts?!?”. I laughed and said “almost”. We left happy and full and went for a very long walk.
Anything for doughnuts! these look succulent and so tempting. Would love to have em all!
I LOVE doughnuts! And I’m having a lot of fun trying them all. They’re so many new interesting flavors out there!
What pretty donuts! Around here we mostly have chain donut places. I can’t say I’ve ever been to a bakery like this before. Those donuts look and sound amazing!
They were! I started looking for unique donuts places when I go out of town.
Wait, a donut with a bacon? I am all in for that one lol. Now I am craving for some sweet.
Bacon on donuts is one of my very favorite things! I am going to have to try this out next time I am in that area!
Oh yummy! I have not tried doughnuts in New York but these definitely need to be sampled but bacon!!! Hmm
Yummers! I have a few favorite donut spots in NYC. I’m always down for adding a new one to my list.
Every time I go, I come with a list!
Oh my, that sounds like my kind of breakfast, lots of fun doughnuts. The beet one looks interesting but I’ll try anything once.
I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it, but it was sooooooo good. The filling was like a cheese danish.
Aww, what a fun little experience! The donuts definitely sounded good and they had some pretty unique ones!
I want to go back and try more!
Donuts are definitely my weakness. Now with the diet I’m on, unfortunately, I havent had a donut in a while. THese pics are totally making my mouth water!!
I’m on a diet now after eating all of those doughnuts!
Bacon, bacon, bacon! The duct tape of food! I cannot ignore that maple glazed donut with a strip of crispy bacon on top. Yum! I have to get to this Doughnut Project restaurant the next time I visit NY!
Looking at that donuts make me so hungry! I want a dozen right now!
So many donuts and so little time to try them all. Good you went back for seconds, might have missed a favorite.
There are a couple more donut shops I want to try when I go back!
hahaha! You sound like me when I’m buying my donuts. I end up with usually double what I came for.
My bf and I spent most of the day walking it off. lol!
I would give these a try. I just LOVE doughnuts. NYC has the best food. I miss it.
I usually plan my weekends there around where I’m going to eat 🙂
Now those are some really interesting doughnuts, I’ve never seen anything quite like them before I don’t think. I would love to try them out if I was near.
New York always has the most interesting food. Here you go again with some pretty creative donuts. At some point I need to come back to New York and enjoy the food.
I find myself planning weekends there now, just so I can eat 🙂
We have some great donuts here at the Jersey shore. I’ve never seen them with beets or parsnips, they sure do sound unique.
I’ve been dying to get to Broad Street Doughnuts in Oakhurst!
I would love to try every single one of those doughnuts! These are the most unusual flavor combos and I want them all! Looks so yummy!
The shop was shocked when I went to the counter with a virtually empty box! My bf and I were only going to “taste” them, but they were sooooo good.
I am ALL FOR some fancy pants donuts, so I would love it there. I think it’s cool when places get creative with their donuts.
Me too! I’ve started “sampling” doughnuts where ever I go.
I love a great doughnut, and those look amazing! That one with bacon on top, I totally want to try it. These would go great with my coffee right about now.
I still can’t believe we almost finished all of them!
OMG Why did I ever click on your post. LOL. Seriously though, I can eat donuts all day but I am trying not to! So this post just made me crave for donuts!!!
Oh, I want!! These look so dang good!!
