My coworker Stef’s birthday was last week. I took her out to lunch and bought her a bought her a box of decorated cookies & pretzels. I think it’s become “our” thing. Well a couple of days later on her actual birthday, I get an email from another coworker asking if we should buy cupcakes or doughnuts or something to celebrate. She wanted to do something fun and started looking at Astro’s menu online for doughnuts. I quickly mentioned how I’ve wanted to try their fried chicken sandwiches and said that she did too. Who wouldn’t want a fried chicken sandwich on a doughnut? They had three sandwich offerings: buffalo chicken, Old Bay, and bacon. She bought all three in addition to about a dozen doughnuts and we took our treasure to our office’s penthouse.
We cut the sandwiches into thirds so each of us could have a little sampler. I honestly couldn’t say that I favored one over the other. They were all great. I guess it would come down to which flavor nuance you were into that day. I love that the doughnut wasn’t glazed. It was just a light, fluffy, soft, sweet bread that was the perfect compliment to the juicy chicken, which was very flavorful also. And what do you have for dessert after devouring a fried chicken sandwich? Doughnuts of course!
I’ve written about their doughnuts before, so I won’t go on and on again, but I can say that they are quickly becoming my favorite doughnut and now fried chicken place in DC!
